Catral has attracted some negative publicity in recent years, with the local council and Mayor under investigation when it came to light that a number of new homes had been built illegally. The legal wranglings over the case are still ongoing but only affect around 1200 new homes built illegally in Catral (on green belt land and the protected nature reservation).
