Ex-mayoress of Valencia Rita Barberá sent bullet through the post

rita-barberaValencia’s ex-mayoress Rita Barberá (PP) says someone has sent her a bullet through the post, anonymously.

She was at the Parliamentary leader voting session in Madrid yesterday (Tuesday) and, not realising her microphone was still switched on, was heard to say: “I can’t wait to get back to Valencia and go to bed.”

But once Sra Barberá returned, she found a package at her home addressed to her and containing a bullet.

The day before, it had been announced that the so-called ‘Ritaleaks’ case had been dropped by the court – a high-profile scandal in which details of Barberá’s ‘expenses’ during her 20-year reign in the city hall were made public, showing she had spent up to €9,000 of taxpayers’ money on five-star hotels for her bodyguards during her two-month summer holidays at her sister’s villa in Jávea (Alicante province).

And the PP in Valencia has been implicated in various public fund embezzlement cases involving inflated estimates and invoices for public works with the difference allegedly being pocketed by politicians and companies carrying out the jobs.

One of these is the ongoing Nóos Institute trial in which King Felipe VI’s brother-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarín, is facing up to 20 years in jail and the monarch’s sister, the Infanta (non-Crown Princess) Cristina, has also been charged.

Rita, who lost her position as mayoress in last May’s elections and made a sideways move into the Senate, has reported the bullet to the police.

She says this is not the first time she has suffered similar threats – in January 2015, a handwritten letter addressed to her at the city hall with what appeared to be deliberately-bad spelling, and with a false ‘return to sender’ address, turned up on her desk with a bullet inside it.

The letter featured the words ‘liberty and anarchy’, and was handed straight to the National Police.
