Rio Almanzora separates Zurgena from the village of La Alfoquia
The petty inland village of Zurgena is a municipality of Almería province, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Zurgena is located in the Almanzora valley close to the towns of Albox, Huercal-Overa and Los Carasoles. It is a 40 minute drive from the tourist resorts of Mojacar Playa, Vera Playa and Garrucha and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Almeria City.
Being also situated very close to the E15 motorway this permits easy and safe access to the Spanish airports of Murcia, Almeria and Alicante and the golf course of Dessert Springs, Valle del Este golf, Aguilon golf and Marina golf.
Zurgena is a traditional Spanish village where the general hussle and bussle of village life is centered around the village square and it’s 5 bars which all serve tapas long into the evening. Other facilities include a kiddies’ play park the newly constructed sports barn, 2 mini-markets, a bakers, 2 banks and two conveyance stores. The principal industry around the area continues to be farming.
The Almanzora river separates Zurgena from the neighboring village of La Alfoquia which lies on the other side of a road bridge just over one kilometer away. If you want to extend your shopping trip, La Alfoquia has more shops for you to browse which includes an electrical shop, a bakery, a hardware shop, boutique, banks, butchers, tobacconist and a petrol station. The town also has an English run fish and chip shop, where traditional fish and chips can be eaten in or taken away.
A small number of Brits have settled in the area which is served by an English-speaking pharmacy and doctors. The school system offers primary and secondary education and a school bus service is available at no charge.
Zurgena is said to host one of the best fiestivals within this area. For one week in August the town come alive with the arrival of International entertainers and a fun fair with rides for all ages. La Alfoquia festival take place in June which is also a lively affair with celebrations continuing throughout the night.
